Where are all the lilacs?

Posted on Friday 21 April 2006

I’ve noticed something here in the Seattle area this early Spring: there are not many lilac shrubs to be found.

Lilac blossoms are, to me, the apex of the olifactory world’s offerings. Nothing soothes me, distracts me, riles me or whisks my mind away like the scent of lilacs in bloom. If they bloomed year round, I would probably be a poet.

I initially thought I would have to put this post in the “MN is Better” category, but I recognized later that this truly is a wash. Lilacs act as of a double-edged sword in my life. If I am romantically involved, lilacs heighten the experience and lead to a state Hindus call “Nirvana”. If I am terminally single, lilacs act as a cruel reminder that I am very much alone.

It all boils down to lilacs being a “romantic mnemomic”, and frankly, I don’t need any more reminders in my life.

Definitely a wash here.

Both my girlfriend and my former boss razzed me for this post, so I had better clarify:

I have a wonderful girlfriend, and I would very much like to have large bouquets of lilacs to roll around in at the moment.

Thank you for pointing out my omission. :P

Welp - my entire western property line is bordered with lilacs… and they’re not open here yet either… must be a latitudinal thing? ;)

LARA!!! Hey howya doin’, lady? Latitudinal thing? O_o I doubt it…they are open here now, and Seattle is probably further north than your locale. It has been very warm and sunny here recently, and lilacs just luuuurve the sun. That is probably what gets them to pop out.

Hey mom…are the lilacs out in Duluth yet?

:( Then I’m not sure what it is… hell, our apple tree is only just budding, and the bulbs I planted in the fall are JUST peeking out of the ground, while the ones that I planted the year before are starting to bud and flower… and it was actually a pretty warm winter here… I think only the wind chill ever brought us below zero, and that might’ve happened once. Last week was 70 degrees here during the day, but nights were colder… I dunno. I just want some stinkeen flowers!!!! ;)

The lilacs in Duluth are budding but won’t be blooming for a while–probably a couple weeks. Depends on how warm it gets. We need some west winds–not those breezes off Lake Superior!
